Masterclass Writing

The Fernie Writers Conference offers a three-month ‘team taught’ writers workshop with Angie Abdou (local author—Anything Girls Can Do and the Bone Cage), Keith Liggett (Director, Fernie Writers Conference) and Carolyn Nikodym (former Managing Editor of the Edmonton VueWeekly). The focus will be on developing and refining new work without genre bias—poetry, fiction, memoir, and non-fiction are all welcome. Limited to 10.

Altered Books
Jan 17- Feb 21, 7-9pm
Fun! Fun! Fun! Give yourself a creative jump, break some rules & breathe life into an old hardcover book by building up a new one! Play with Japanese paper collage, cutouts, painting, lino prints, popup structures & photograms, while sharing the power of a group. Warmup movements and activities begin each class. Emphasis on process. All levels welcome.

Expressive Arts Intro

This class is about making time for you…to play…and reflect…Get your hands on art materials, make something, & you feel an expression of your inner world! Specific individual & group activities give you lots of choices to paint, draw, write, sculpt and move…even if you haven’t done these for ages! Bring your curiosity & acceptance… set aside the quest for perfect techniques & products! All levels welcome.

The Potter’s Wheel

Take your wheel skills to the next level. Strengthen basic skills through specific projects. New forms will be introduced that demand shaping and altering clay. Appropriate for those who have some experience on the wheel. Adults 16 and up. $140/session. (inc. $20 clay/studio fees)

Encaustic Workshop with Ronda Wood
Saturday, January 26 ‘08, 1 pm - 4 pm
Introduction to encaustic; tools, waxes, techniques. No previous artistic ability needed…
Encaustic means to burn in - using heat as the solvent for coloured waxes. Learn techniques starting with the simplest marks that a heated iron makes with the molten waxes, worked onto the sealed painting card surface. As you progress and gain skill, the introduction of other low-heat tools and equipment allows further exploration. All tools and materials will be supplied for the workshop … all you need is your imagination.

CartooningTwo great workshops

For Beginners. 9 - 14yrs.
Friday, January 18, 4 -6pm.
Learn to draw and ink cartoon characters, develop expressions, build backgrounds and create situations. Take home a self-styled creation. $18/student.

Intermediate/Advanced 14-adult
Friday, February 1 6:30-9:30pm.
Develop beyond the basic drawing and ink cartoon characters. Create comic strips, editorials, graphic novels, stories and conversations. Complete a cartoon from thumbnails to finished colour cartoons. $25/student.

Family Gallery!Jan. 26, 2 - 4pm
Enjoy a fun interactive tour of the current Arts Station exhibit (at 2pm) & then dive into art-making with a related art project for the whole family ! Suggested donation $5 per parent & child. All materials provided. Designed for children 4+ to attend with an adult. (12 year olds welcome too!) *Please, no unaccompanied children.* No registration required.
