Stephen Fearing After more than 20 years, the Juno Award-winning Stephen Fearing (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) delivers intimate emotions with the natural flow of his guitar, the instrument he calls “a band in a box.” With songs of quiet reflection, not rash urgency, his compelling stage presence is earned from experience, and his lyrics wind their way across the country and back, painting portraits of the loves and loss, as well as the landscape.

John Mann When you hear John Mann’s guitar lines, pared down to the barest bones, it’s hard to imagine him as part of the more raucous folksters Spirt of the West—that is until he lets out his trademark world-weary voice. His lyrics songs are both raw and insightful, cynical and witty. This is Mister Man, alone with his voice, his guitar and his razor-sharp mind.

McCrae Linda McRae’s honky-tonk is the stuff of scuffed boots and dusty jeans. With a banjo in her grasp, the Vancouver musician has performed across North America, joined Fred Eaglesmith on his yearly Roots on the Rails tour and made quite a name for herself in Nashville. McRae plucks at your heart the way she does the strings, and you know she’s the kind of friend you’d want by your side if you found yourself crying in your beer.

Mary and Max Clay animation is a fussy form of filmmaking, one that requires patience and passion. Five years in the making, Mary and Max is most certainly a labour of love for the Oscar-winning director Adam Elliot of Harvie Krumpet. It tells the story of the young Mary and the middle-aged Max, who form an unlikely bond across generations and continents as pen pals. The animation is superb, characters endearing, humour abundant and the themes of isolation and depression are honestly explored.
