“We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces.” That’s Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, the over-the-hill silent film star in the 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard. “The Artist” is a new black and white silent movie that doesn’t need dialogue either. It has faces and they belong to George Valentin, a silent movie superstar and Peppy Miller, a spunky ingénue. Their story takes place in the early days of Hollywood before the advent of talking pictures, when someone like Valentin could grin with such a winning combination of self- confidence, self-deprecation and self-awareness, that dialogue was redundant. A combination of delightful humour and charm.
