Exhibit A
January 16 to February 16

Panoramic Photos - As a self-taught photographer from Ontario, Jennifer headed west to Kananaskis in the winter of '98 and fell immediately in love with the mountainous landscape. Within a couple of years she had found a new home here in Fernie. Jennifer's photography focuses primarily on the beauty of our natural landscape; from the majesty of a snow-capped mountain to the delicate petals of the smallest wildflower. She attempts to capture special moments on film to share with others. Owning her own panoramic photo business Jennifer is presenting her own work for the first time.

In Our Gardens
November 17 - December 15

The Fernie Visual Arts Group spent several days painting au plein aire this summer and autumn. The entire surroundings of this valley, with the colours, vegatation and mountains are a constant invitation to paint. Two afternoons were spent in the back and front yard gardens of Margaret and Ralph Stadnichuk. Some of the works were started and completed outdoors, while others were started outdoors and completed later. We also painted all winter indoors and painted one evening at the Tea House.

The Fernie Visual Arts Group meets every Monday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at the Arts Station. Artists work in their favourite media which are water colours, acrylics, oils, pencils and collage. Beginners and working artists are invited to attend. Encouragement and positive feedback are part of the evening along with the sharing of ideas.

A Contemporary Twist on Pottery Classics
November 17 - December 15

It has been said that creativity explodes boundaries. Five East Kootenay potters set out to test this theory. Their constraints? Just five black and white shapes. Heather Fletcher, Sher Pichler, Penny Rinas, Kerri Holmes and Karen Deibert revisit traditional vase forms applying their individual style to the project. The results inevitably celebrate each potter's unique style and sensibility. Morphology honours ceramic history and brings it a fresh twist.

Pushing Boundaries

Decorative Arts comprises of a wide variety of techniques and mediums to decorate functional and non-functional surfaces. With its roots in Europe, it was introduced to North America by the early settlers, and from this start, a unique North American style all of its own developed. Great results can be achieved as you will see when you visit the show. The Guild welcomes you to enjoy the items on display and learn more about what the Decorative Arts Guild has to offer.

A rare showing of Jocelyn Thomas originals
October 12 – November 17

Opening Friday, October 12, 5-7pm.
In the Theatre: A rare showing of Jocelyn Thomas originals. The highlight of the exhibit: the unveiling of images for the mural panel for Fernie’s Tom Uphill Manor. This former “king” of BC politics was mayor for 11 years, MLA for 40. (If ever there was a Fernie First Citizen. . . . ) Peruse Jocelyn’s “narrative” realism applied to the wide western category of trains, horses, cowboys, fisherman, skiers and all in between — over tea and cakes.

Thomas also interprets the Fernie experience thoroughly and has rendered many images for museum shops, and is responsible for Fernie’s centennial panel. Wunderkind Jessis Plessis, will tickle the ivories, and the bonus: a mini-exhibit of Knud Larsen photographs.

Many of the people who came to Fernie in the early years came not only for the work and economic opportunities, but also to make a home with their families. Integral to this is access to health care in all its aspects. How health care has been delivered has certainly changed over the past century. Fernie and its citizens have been part of this ongoing process. Our exhibit documents in words, images and artifacts how the story played out here.

Painting enables me to explore this transformative magic through the process of my work. We can become over-civilized, transforming our surroundings to meet our ever increasing needs. Realizing that it is ourselves that can be transformed by the simplicity and beauty found in our natural landscape is restorative.
