Each finished piece has subtle variances which makes each print unique. The workshop will cover initial design, carving of the block and printing a one colour woodblock print. Letterpress printing has become an artisan trade with a unique aesthetic and tactile appeal. The printing process used in letterpress printing has remained virtually unchanged in 500 years. Because it is the only relief printing process, the product has a 3 dimensional, tactile quality that modern digital presses cannot achieve. At this workshop Michael Hepher will teach you how to pick, set, and print with traditional lead type on a 100 year old Chandler & Price press. The end result will be a small printed product like a broadsheet, poem, or paper ephemera that you can take home. Bring a favourite poem, quote, or phrase and dress in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty! www.clawhammer.ca

The process takes some planning and forethought. The instructor will guide students through the steps and planning. Materials are included in the cost of the workshop. Carving tools will be provided. Taught by Michael Hepher, owner/operator of Clawhammer Press. For more information visit www.clawhammer.ca
