Out of the Box is a public art project where artists transform unexpected items into vibrant works of art. It began with painted dumpsters, and with over 60 now in the community, the project has expanded to include other surfaces and spaces.

Every August, the project comes alive with a multi-day festival, inviting the community and visitors to watch artwork take shape, meet the artists, and participate in hands-on art activities. Youth workshops are offered to inspire the next generation of artists, and guided public art tours showcase Fernie’s growing art inventory.

The festival concludes with the Out of the Box Social, a celebration of the finished creations featuring live music, a beer garden, and a people’s-choice vote. Attendees also get a first look at the annual art banners, up close.
